How to Use Study Urdu
Study Urdu teaches you to read Urdu script through interactive flashcards and spaced repetition. Here's everything you need to know to get started.
route Navigating the course
The Learning Path is your home screen. It shows all available levels arranged in a tree. Each circle represents a level — tap or click any level to begin.
- Green circles are levels you haven't started yet
- Partially filled rings show your progress in that level
- Gold checkmarks mean you've mastered every item in the level
Some levels start with a short lesson that introduces new concepts before you begin practicing.
style Using flashcards
Flashcards are the core of the course. Each card has two sides:
- Front: Shows the Urdu text. Try to recall the pronunciation and meaning.
- Back: Tap the card to flip it and reveal the transliteration, English meaning, and any example usage.
After flipping, rate how well you knew it:
- Hard — you didn't know it or struggled. It keeps showing up until you get it.
- Good — you got it with some effort. It will show once more for confirmation.
- Easy — you knew it instantly. It's mastered and won't come back.
- Skip — move to the next card without rating.
volume_up Hearing pronunciation
Every flashcard has audio pronunciation. There are two ways to hear it:
- Speaker button volume_up — tap the speaker icon in the top-right corner of any flashcard.
- Tap the Urdu text — tap any Urdu word or letter directly on the card to hear it spoken. For sentences, you can tap individual words to hear them separately.
save Your progress
Your progress saves automatically. You never need to manually save anything.
- Progress is stored in your browser. You can close the tab and come back anytime — your place is saved.
- Sign in (optional) to sync your progress across devices. Your data is backed up to the cloud and follows you everywhere.
- To start fresh, use Reset progress in the account menu (click the person icon in the top-right).
psychology How spaced repetition works
Study Urdu uses spaced repetition to help you remember what you learn. Instead of cramming, items come back for review at increasing intervals:
- Items you rate Hard keep showing up until you get them right
- Items you rate Good show once more for confirmation, then are mastered
- Items you rate Easy are mastered immediately and won't come back
This means the course adapts to you — you spend more time on what you find difficult and less on what you already know.
trending_up Tracking your progress
When you're practicing a level, the right panel (or below on mobile) shows your Growth Tracker:
- Known words — total items you've successfully recalled
- Due today — items scheduled for review today
- Streak — consecutive days you've practiced
- Level mastery — a grid showing your progress through each item in the current level
- Weaknesses — items you rate "Hard" most often, so you can focus on them
help Tips
